Lawncare Tips & Advice
If you love your garden, then you'll know that lawncare can be a headache sometimes. Here at Blades of Glory, we have put together some tips and advice on how to keep your lawn healthy.

We all want that perfect lawn and there really is a science behind achieving it. Whether you want to take just a few points away or take them all, we are confident that you'll see an improvement.

Mowing Your Lawn

This is one of the most important aspects of lawncare. Please do not mow your lawn short, you're killing it. Doing it only allows unwanted visitors to nestle into the soil such as weeds, daisy's and buttercups.
You're also leaving the base exposed to the sun and in summer this will burn your lawn.
You should always keep some height to your blades. This restricts room and can prevent visitors from establishing themselves. It also gives the base some shade during hot summer days.
Scarify & Reseed Your Lawn

Thatch is the base of old grass stems that die and decay. Include loose clippings from mowing the lawn and over time, it builds up and can get quite thick.
Depending on the condition of your lawn, scarifying it and casting some fresh seed does do wonders.
Using a scarifier helps pull the thatch from the base without pulling the grass from its roots. It can leave some bare patches but once you cast some fresh grass seed and water, those patches soon vanish.
Aeration

Aeration is something you can do after you have scarified your lawn, even with a garden fork. Aeration is the process removing small nuggets of soil or puncturing holes into the ground.
This allows air, light, water and nutrition to reach the roots of the grass to help promote strength and health.

This is especially beneficial when in heavy, compact soil. The benefits are noticeable within days when you combine fertiliser and water.
Levelling Your Lawn

If you've just laid a new lawn and your noticing bumps and small funny looking piles of soil. Don't panic, its just worms working their magic. If you can access a roller, this helps press the lumps and small bumps down.

If your lawn is a little older and your mower is bobbing left and right, try and use some top soil or sand. The type of sand to use is play sand or builders sand. You will need a certain type of rake to help spread and level the lawn. As you work the sand through the lawn, it will fall into all the dips etc and you will begin to notice it level out.

Lawn Feeds & Fertilisers

Whether you use liquid feeds or granular, they both work the same way. Liquid feeds are best applied with a pressure sprayer.
Granular feeds can be cast by hand if you don't own a fertiliser spreader. Be sure to use a gloves when doing this.
Feeding and fertilising your lawn is designed to give your lawn the vital nutrients needed to strengthen themselves and provide a beautiful dark green shade of colour. Typically you want to feed your lawn four times a year.
Watering Your Lawn

Not many people water their lawn, just like any plant, grass needs water. It keeps it lush and and healthy especially during summer.

Watering your lawn can be an issue if you have a hose pipe ban. Having back up water supply helps in these situations. If you haven't got a water butt, then get one installed.

Have you just had a fresh lawn installed? If so, water it in the evenings when the sun is low. This will help stop the drying out and gives plenty of time for the roots to soak up that goodness during the night.
